Eco Material - 8

Eco Materials

The material that I keep hearing about is bamboo so I decided to look into it as a possible material instead of wood.

Bamboo
- Can be sustainably farmed and harvested bamboo
- Fast growing
- The bamboo is cut into log thin strips before being aligned and then pressed into thick sturdy planks
- Creates a intresting natural pattern - links to my idea of using a natural patters - linking to organic forms, which I looked at before I started my material research.

Interesting article about bamboo
'Booming bamboo: The next super-material?'
Publisher 3rd April 2012
By Mike Wooldridge

'the timber of the 21st Century'

'Ready to be harvested annually and sustainably after four to five years in contrast to the typical tropical hardwood that takes many years longer to mature and can be harvested only once.'

Thoughts
- Is it or can it be grown in the UK
- Do the different types make a different to its durability
- Are there other materials that link to bamboo as a material - thinking about other plants that can be made into a material for the paint pot or packaging for transport.
