Notes
In the 70's
- oil strike
- fossile fule shortage
- fear of WW3
- Nuclear war fear
Those reasons lead to CAT being forms, it is built on a state quarry
CAT is proud to say they have learnt from there mistakes, they have been left on site as a reminder, from where they have come from and to prevent other making similar mistakes.
A example of one of there mistake which has remained, the gift shop has been made from green wood, as it dried it warped causing the glass in the celling to crack which then had to be replaced.
CAT has turned into a educational physicality
Sustainable design
- 98% of what the UK buy is thrown away within 6 months
'If we can't imagine a healthy further, we can't create one'
There are two ways of measuring your foot print
- Carbon
- Eco - looking at space - people and resources
Think about how our land is used which is mainly cattle - we need to make scarifies in the meet we eat to grow things for energy, such as grasses we can burn
CAT uses unique ways to to insulate there buildings such as sheep wall, cut up newspaper, hemp & lime
The more processing a product takes the more energy it takes to make
The cost/ energy it takes to make a product is different depending on the country
some eco building material looked at
- fiber glass
- sheeps wool
- Ash - tree
- Corke
- Wood fiber board
- wood fiber
- Mineral wool
- compressed earth and clay
- Strew bells
- warm cell - shredded newspaper
The eco effectiveness of a materiel is not just that it can be recycled, but the energy it takes to make, and transport.
Demonstration of products and secondary uses
old broken umbrellas into bags
new is not always better
electrical hand fans Vs Chinese fans
hovers Vs sweepers
battery torches Vs shake or wind up torches
The main aim for design is that it is fit for purpose - eg it is strong enough for transport - wont be damaged
