Eco Materials - 1

This website I found particularly helpful when looking at materails this website below,it contains a verity of satainable materials.

From the cat trip I decided to look into the possibility of using wood for the paint pot, I used the website to research into using wood, and if this could be a possibility.

 Wood possibilities I looked at

- M.D.F

A high quality, formaldehyde free M.D.F., made using a high proportion of wood waste taken from both industrial and domestic waste streams. Available in a wide range of sheet sizes and thicknesses.

- Intrallam

A structural timber joist made from 100% recycled softwood. The reclaimed wood is cut down into thin wafers, and then sandwiched back together under high pressure. The result is a robust, easy-to-tool timber which doesn't warp or bend.

- Hardboard

This board is made from 100% recycled wood waste and uses no formaldehyde or bleaching agents during manufacture. It is available in a wide range of sheet thicknesses.

- Timber

There are guidelines and recommendations as to how the timber specifier can ensure that the wood they select comes from a sustainably managed forestry unit.

After looking at the different types the best options seem to be the MDF or the hardboard, I also think I need to look deeper into Intrallam, and Timber. I contacted am man called Edward Flint who works as a arborist so he would be aware of the different types of wood and if it would be possible as a solution.

Flint recommend either using MDF as it is made from reused wood, there is also a waterproof type. The other option was Plywood which is stronger, he added that both were recyclable.

I asked - If I was to use he waterproof MDF and create a box, what would you recommend as a silent for the joints, - Flint as he would use a silicone but said he didn't think it was recyclable.

- Plywood

The most recommendable way to dispose of plywood is to find a new end use application for it.

for this reason I think plywood wound not be suitable as we want a product that can be recycled if the user does not wish to have it for a secondary purpose.

What Next
- look at silicone - is there any more eco friendly alternatives
- consider the shape, if wood if used it can not be made round - what does the effect of a square tin have on how easy it is to use e.g. pour
- Look further into MDF, will it be suitable, and why
- look at ways to make the wood water proof
look more into Intrallam, and Timber.
