Unpackaged shop

I came across an interesting article

London's Unpackaged Grocery Shop Eliminates Wasteful Packaging
by Bridgette Meinhold, 01/21/10

This shop in London has strict eco-policies on where their source their food from and relies on there customers to bring containers to but the product in to take home.

What the shop sells - everything from
- nuts, flour, sugar, beans, herbs, spices, - to
- oils, vinegars, produce, cheese, bread and even wine

The store sells almost all their goods out of bulk bins and the packaged items they do carry are minimal and easily recyclable.

Why unpackaged?
-  It’s cheaper to buy and sell things in bulk
Packaging is a waste of resources and time
- Packaging is really just rubbish and causes pollution because it is so often sent to the landfill.

Thoughts
- This could reduce food waste, as we can only fill the boxes it takes, making us be more specific about what we need and use, this is more similar to old fashioned way of shopping
- This requires us to think more in advance, changing our habits, which is what is need for a sustainable future.
- As a community we have become obsessed with cleanliness, particularly when food is involved. For this reason I think there will need to be rules so people are not worried about buying food that is more open.

- To move forward into a future that is more stainable, we need to me more open to change.
- The answers to our future I believe will take us into the past, this does not have to be a bad thing eg, shops reverting back to a older style (a pick and mixs look).

- I not sure how far this shopping idea could be pushed, it would work for food,
- In the form of paint and thinking about the customers target audience, this idea would not work for the company pots of paints.
