After looking at the, The Eco-Design Manifesto which was previously posted, I found a video of a man talking about his new book and the way it has been produced in a eco friendly way.
I picked out several of the eco manifesto points which applied to the product and video.
2. Design to minimise the
ecological footprint of the product/material/service product, i.e. reduce
resource consumption, including energy and water.
- Due to the way the book is made it saves
84 fully grown trees.
3. Design to harness solar income
(sun, wind, water or sea power) rather than use non renewable nature capital
such as fossil fuels.
- The production of this book avoids coal
mining, bleaching and chlorine and instead uses sola and wind power and
reincarnation mat paper.
7. Design to use locally available
materials and resources wherever possible (thinking globally but acting
locally).
- Taking materials from landfills and using
them to create paper, taking 4170 pound of toxic waste and turning it around to
make a book
12. Design to foster debate and
challenge the status quo surrounding existing products/materials/ service
products.
- Using 100% recycled paper, and sourcing
materials from landfills challenges the norm of production, as well as using
vegetable ink for printing.
13. Publish eco-pluralistic designs
in the public domain for everyone's benefit, especially those designs that
commerce will not manufacture.
- At the back of the book there is a
advertisement for the printing company used “www.printnetinc.com” which the
video say “prints the right way” this is because they use non-toxic vegetable
inks. This book is also printed using 100% recycled paper.
14. Design to create more
sustainable products/materials/service products for a more sustainable future.
- By not just looking at shipping and
packaging but also the product itself, and the way it is made.
